The River Raisin

Michigan is known for the Great Lakes but venture inland and you will discover a network of ponds and rivers that provide a perfect habitat for a variety of wildlife and watersports.  Our area is proudly home to the River Raisin which is known as one of the worlds curviest rivers.  Just as in life, you never know what will be around the bend.  Don’t worry though, our section of the raisin has fairly calm currents with excellent fishing pools.  The River Raisin is 150 miles long and feeds many lakes and ponds with warm water and over 80 species of freshwater fish.  Its name was given by French settlers who found wild grapes growing along the riverbanks.

Many towns have benefited from this river as it winds through five counties in southeast Michigan and finally dumps into Lake Erie.  Our community is fortunate to have the Tecumseh Paddling Company.  They provide shuttle from Clinton all the way to Blissfield with their home base at the Mill Pond in Tecumseh.  They offer many routes and watercraft choices including portage of you and your own canoe.  Boat rentals start at $10 with your choice of kayaks and canoes, stand-up paddleboards, paddleboats and rowboats.  That’s something to make everyone happy!  Make a day of it and enjoy a picnic in the open air pavilion with charcoal grills and a playground.  Take in the wildlife while hiking the trails or fishing.  Teens will even be entertained at the skate park and inline hockey rink or tennis courts.  No matter how you choose to do it, just get outside and enjoy summer together!

The Tecumseh Paddling Company is located just 5 miles east on M-50 from Ford Highway.  tecumsehpaddle.com   517-423-2700
