Cooking and CampingCamping by itself is a great family activity, and some might think that cooking around a campfire is the ultimate fun for the weekend! Fresh, outdoor open air will increase your appetite, and all the extra activities you can do while camping will make you hungry.

Cooking on a campfire is different than cooking at home, in many aspects. While you can’t use the nice cooking items you do at home, you can prepare some really tasty meals over a campfire, if you plan right and shop well.

Camping foods should also be easy to pack and store safely under camping conditions. Basic camp cooking tools would be a grill – sometimes provided by the campground – campfire skewers, a solid cooking pot, and some creative imagination! Get the whole family involved in the cooking; they will enjoy the food even more knowing they helped cook over a campfire.

A couple of camp food basics include chili, beans, and hot dogs. Chili is easy to make, inexpensive and a favorite of just about everybody. Chili is also great to warm you up and fill you up. Beans add flavor to anything – the chili, rice dish, or other recipes you may want to try.

The hot dog is classic to camping because it is easily kept in a cooler and quick to make for those fast snacks when needed. In addition, everyone from kids to seniors adores a good old-fashioned hot dog, either cooked on the grill or on a skewer over the campfire.

Breakfast can be easy and quick on a camping stove or over a fire. You can still enjoy scrambled eggs, pancakes, and sausages using a pan. Try boiling water to make oatmeal and adding things like nuts, raisins, and cranberries as a great energy booster that will fill you up all day.

Last but not least, the beloved S’more. Get those graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows ready for the absolute favorite treat known to camping. This delicious treat and camping go together, no matter where you decide to camp!
